MOUNTAIN TRAILS

If mountain biking is where your heart lies, then the International Mountain Bicycling Association EPIC Ouachita National Recreation Trail is the ride to conquer. This 108-mile multiuse trail is a true adventure with beautiful mountain vistas, clear stream crossings and rugged terrain. If you want to experience one of the oldest trails in the state, take on Earthquake Ridge. Located uphill from Mena, this trail offers 6.8 miles of classic mountain biking. It will soon be joined by the new Mena Downhill Trails.

Near Fort Smith at Ben Geren, you will find more than 7 miles of paved, multiuse trail and more than 14 miles of rugged singletrack MTB trails. Shift between flat sections, challenging climbs and steep descents through dense forest and paths suitable for all skill levels. Another popular ride is the 9.4-mile trail at Springhill Park in Barling, located along the Arkansas River. Farther north in the Ozarks, ride right from your cabin or campsite on the 12.4-mile Boston Mountain Trail at Lake Fort Smith State Park.

In Van Buren, Colley Wilderness Park packs a punch with five trails ranging from singletrack to rock gardens to a downhill-only trail that drops eight stories across 700 feet.

ROAD & GRAVEL GRINDERS

You don’t have to shred along forest floors to take in the full breadth of nature. Road and gravel grinders will supply you with stunning panoramic views of the Ouachita and Ozark Mountains.

Start your journey in the Ozark National Forest with the 57-mile Mount Magazine Loop. You’ll enjoy stellar views, switchbacks and steep grades as you make your way to the highest point in the state at Mount Magazine State Park. Another popular Ozark ride is the Hazel Valley Loop — one of the most challenging routes in Western Arkansas. This gravel grinder runs just over 55 miles and boasts 6,000 feet of elevation!

Farther south in the Ouachitas, the Rich Mountain Ride leads you to the state’s second-highest peak at 2,680 feet and the site of Queen Wilhelmina State Park. Choose between 30-, 50- or 70-mile routes with steep climbs and wild descents on this classic road ride.

Just 30 minutes outside of Fort Smith, you’ll find several loop trails along Greenwood Lake. Greenwood Lake North Trail gives riders an opportunity to plow through the dirt and take in a view of the shoreline.
